The Wellington Phoenix secured their first back-to-back wins in the A-League with an incident-filled 2-nil win over Newcastle in Wellington.
The Phoenix, playing with a one-man advantage for just over an hour - and a two-man buffer for 40 minutes - left it late to collect the three competition points, striker Shane Smeltz collecting his eighth goal of the season with 11 minutes remaining and replacement Troy Hearfield scored six minutes later.
The Jets lost Joel Griffiths after 28 minutes for kicking out at a player and Mark Milligan just after half time for a studs up challenge.
The Jets' misery was complete in injury time when Tarek Elrich, fouled in the penalty area by Karl Dodd, had his spot kick saved by Mark Paston.
The Phoenix are 6th on the table, just 2 points out of the top four... the Jets are 4 points behind them in 7th.
