Argentina have beaten Poland 2-nil to secure top spot in Group C at the Qatar FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi and Co. faced a resilient first-half against Poland at the Stadium 974 - Ras Abu Aboud.

The Argentinians had numerous chances in the first 45 minutes, including a Lionel Messi penalty which was saved incredibly by Poland keeper Wojech Szczesny.

However, they started the second-half strong with midfielder Alexis Mac Allister curling in a low effort just a minute into proceedings.

Mid-way through the half, young striker Julian Alvarez made it two as he brought down a dinked pass to send a shot into the top right of the goal.

Group C was precariously poised for this final day of action but Argentina secured the win they needed to progress to the Round of 16.

Poland have also advanced to the next round by the skin of their teeth after they were forced to wait for the outcome of the Mexico vs Saudi Arabia match.

A late goal from Saudi Arabia left Poland one goal ahead on goal difference in second place in Group C.

Argentina will play Australia in the Round of 16 while Poland will take on the defending champions France.
