The Black Caps have suffered one of their heaviest defeats in one day cricket after going down by 181 runs to England in the third ODI at The Oval.

New Zealand was dismissed for 187 in 39 overs chasing a daunting target of 369.

It is New Zealand's sixth biggest losing margin by runs.

England lead the four match series 2-1.

It is the second straight heavy defeat for the tourists who went down by 79 runs in Southampton on Monday.

After being asked to bat first England scored 368 with Ben Stokes making 182.

His knock is the highest for England in ODI's and it included 15 fours and nine sixes.

Dawid Malan also made 96.

New Zealand tried seven bowlers with Lockie Ferguson going for 80 runs from nine overs, with Kyle Jamieson and Ben Lister both going for 69 runs.

Trent Boult picked up five wickets for 51 runs.

The New Zealand innings stumbled to 37 for four with Devon Conway making nine, Will Young 12, Henry Nicholls four and Tom Latham three.

Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips put on 33 runs for the fifth wicket, before Mitchell went for 17.

Phillips made 72 and Rachin Ravindra 28 to give the New Zealand score some respectability.

Chris Woakes and Liam Livingston took three wickets each.

Afterwards captain Tom Latham had no excuses.

"We knew we were going to have to bat well if we wanted to get there but being 40 for four we were backed against the wall and weren't able to build those partnerships.

"Thoroughly outplayed today and we get an opportunity in a couple of days to level the series."

The fourth and final game is across London at Lord's tomorrow night.
