The first official day of the 2024 Olympic Games has ended in Paris, following a colourful opening ceremony on the banks of the River Seine.

The Canadian women's football team has been sanctioned by FIFA for a spying scandal which saw a drone flying above the New Zealand women's football team training before their Olympic match.

In two separate statements, the New Zealand Olympic Committee and New Zealand Football welcomed the sanctions but said they did not address the direct impact on the team.

Earlier, Dunedin swimmer Erika Fairweather was "gutted" after narrowly missing out on winning New Zealand's first medal at the Paris Olympics, finishing fourth in the women's 400-metre freestyle final.
