The opening one day cricket international between the New Zealand women's side and Australia has been abandoned without a ball being bowled, due to the weather.

Continual rain in Wellington meant no play was possible at the Basin Reserve in the first game of the three match series.

All three matches are to be played in Wellington with game two on Saturday.

The match was to be first game the White Ferns first home game back in New Zealnad since the T20 World Cup success earlier this year.

New Zealand Cricket had made entry for the match free and has now decided to extend that to games two and three given the washout.

Four thousand spectators had reserved tickets for today's match.

NZC's Esther Lawrence said it was disappointing there was no match but "with two matches remaining and brighter weather on the horizon, we're confident the Rose Bowl series is going to be an entertaining affair.

"Our World Cup champion White Ferns deserve to play in front of an emphatic home crowd."

Those who had bought tickets for 21 and 23 December will receive a full refund, and will not need to obtain new tickets for the match as their current tickets will remain valid, she said.
