There has been a set-back for the White Ferns ahead of internationals next month with pace bowler Molly Penfold ruled out for the rest of the summer.

Penfold sustained a torn meniscus to her knee while warming up for one of Auckland's Hallyburton Johnstone Shield games earlier this month.

A New Zealand Cricket statement said the 23-year-old underwent surgery last week and is expected to return to full fitness in eight-to-12 weeks' time.

The injury means Penfold will be unavailable for the remainder of the HBJ Shield and the inbound Sri Lanka and Australia series'.

White Ferns coach Ben Sawyer said it was disappointing for Penfold.

"It's a really unfortunate way for her summer to end, especially after strong contributions during the Rose Bowl series.

"The positive is that her recovery timelines should see her fit for our winter training schedule."

The White Ferns squad to face Sri Lanka will be named next week.
