Pupils commemorate Parihaka

8:32 pm on 5 November 2012

While many New Zealanders celebrated Guy Fawkes on Monday, Wellington High School remembered an infamous day in Maori history - the destruction of Parihaka.

The day marks the attack on the Taranaki Maori village of Parihaka in 1881 by colonial troops.

Wellington High School history teacher Michael Harcourt says the school is working with local mana whenua Taranaki Whanui to learn more about the history.

He says the school has particular relevance, as many Parihaka Maori who were arrested were held close to the school at nearby Puke Ahu, the site of the former Mount Cook Prison.
