A memorial headstone commemorating 100 years since the death of the principal guide at the Pink and White Terraces, was unveiled in Rotorua on Sunday.
Te Paea Hinerangi who was born in the Bay of Islands in the 1830s, died on 4 December 1911.
Also known as Guide Sophia, she was living at Te Wairoa on the shores of Lake Tarawera, when the Government in the early 1870s appointed her a tour guide at the terraces south of Rotorua.
Rotorua Council's Kaupapa Maori director Mauriora Kingi says the headstone was unveiled at Te Paakira Marae in Whakarewarewa Village.
He says Te Paea Hinerangi is owed a lot of thanks for helping establish tourism in the area.
Mr Kingi says the memorial features Guide Sophia's name, date of birth and death and also that she was a loved kuia of Rotorua.
After the 1886 Tarawera eruption destroyed the terraces, he says she worked as a guide at Whakarewarewa.
