An end to violence

7:40 am on 4 November 2013

The US Secretary of State John Kerry has called for an end to all violence in Egypt and urged moves to full democracy on his first visit to the country since President Mohammed Morsi was ousted.

The BBC reports him saying that history has demonstrated that democracies are more stable, viable and prosperous than any alternative. He says the US is committed to working with Egypt's military-backed rulers.

The Former President Morsi goes on trial tomorrow, facing charges of inciting the killing of protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012

His supporters say he was removed in a coup and is now facing a politicised trial.
