Provisional data shows 117 same-sex couples were married through to the end of September. Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson released the data from Statistics New Zealand today, commenting that one-third of the marriages had been to overseas residents, compared with 10 per cent of opposite-sex marriage.
The first same-sex marriage took place on August 19, and 61 per cent of the total registrations were of female couples. The 47 per cent of the 117 unions were couples transferring their civil unions to marriage. Just 33 civil unions were registered over the same period – down from 53 in the same quarter a year ago.
Just under 2800 marriages total were registered in the September quarter in New Zealand.
