New Zealand has tumbled in an international ranking of 15 year-olds' abilities in maths, reading and science, known as PISA.

Formerly in the among the top performing nations in the OECD, New Zealand is now outside the top 10 nations in reading and science and barely above the average in maths. Kind of like dropping from Excellence to Achieved.

In countries previously ranked below New Zealand, scores improved or declined only slightly, which pushed New Zealand from seventh to 13th in reading, seventh to 18th in science and from 13th to 23rd in maths.

Here's the coverage from Morning Report, with RNZ's education correspondent explaining things properly, The Education Minister Hekia Parata, and Labour's education spokesperson Chris Hipkins.
