The Green Party is calling on the ACT Party leader John Banks to resign, saying his political career is all but over.
A judge in the High Court in Auckland has ruled that Banks should stand trial for making a false electoral return relating to his bid for the Auckland mayoralty in 2010.
He is accused of listing donations from SkyCity and internet entrepeneur Kim Dotcom as anonymous while in fact knowing who had made them.
Heading in to an election year, it could be damaging publicity for Banks and the party – which is currently polling very low.
The Greens said Banks' reputation has been severely damaged.
Co-leader Metiria Turei said Banks is not suited to parliament and needs to go.
