Girl found with suicide vest

A young Afghan girl wearing a suicide vest has been detained by police in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.

The Interior Ministry says she was trying to carry out an attack against the border police.

The girl, thought to be aged between eight and 10 and to be the sister of a prominent Taliban commander, is said to be in a state of shock and confusion.

The police have said her brother encouraged her to carry out the attack. An Interior Ministry spokesman said she could not operate the button that would have detonated the suicide vest, or she was arrested before she could carry out the attack.
