#notamartyr

The death of a teenager in a car bomb attack in Lebanon has prompted a "selfie protest" in the country under the hashtag #notamartyr.

Opposition politician Mohamad Chatah was killed in Beirut ten days ago. Four others were killed, including 16-year-old Mohammad Chaar who happened to be in the area with friends.

While mainstream media focussed on the dead politician, the social media focus was on the way the teen was being dubbed a "martyr" by some. A Not a Martyr Facebook and Twitter account were set up after which #notamartyr began to trend.

The campaign's organisers are encouraging people to post selfies of themselves, together with a simple message. A selfie is what Mohammed was taking moments before the explosion.

One of the first to start tweeting about the attack was 25-year-old blogger Dylan Badran. He argues the word "martyr" is used in Lebanon to politicise violence and to dehumanise innocent victims caught up in violence.
