Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is taking crowd-sourced creativity to a bold new level with his show, HitRecord On TV.

The first episode of the variety show was released online this week, ahead of its premiere on new US cable TV channel Pivot.

Gordon-Levitt, who hosts and is an executive producer, says 426 artists collaborated to making the 23-minute show.

The contributing artists are part of an online community of thousands that includes writers, photographers, graphic designers, musicians and artists of all types on hitRECord.org, which was started as an experimental creative collaboration by Gordon-Levitt and his late brother, Dan, in 2005.

Community members are also involved highlighting the work the like, by voting on work and compiling albums. Contributors are also get a share of the profits. You can read more about that in the Wall Street Journal.

hitRECord has already produced books, albums and films, but this its first foray into television. Eight pisodes, each based around a different them are planned for the season.

Gordon-Levitt says: “I’m deeply proud of this show, and I think you’re realllllly gonna like it. Honestly, making this thing together with all the artists from around the world in our hitRECord community has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life so far.”
