Govt set to stop animal testing

9:24 am on 5 May 2014

The Government will end all testing of animals for legal high products, Radio New Zealand reports.

Prime Minister John Key says the Government had intended to allow tests to be carried out on rats, but not other animals such as rabbits.

However, he says official advice is that testing of rats alone would be insufficient, so all animal testing will be banned in respect of synthetic cannabis and party pill products.

The ban will be included in legislation to be introduced to Parliament this week.
