After seven weeks Spotify has pulled what one band thought would be a money-spinner.
Funk group Vulfpeck released Sleepify, an album of 10 silent tracks exclusively on the streaming platform and urged fans to play it on repeat while they slept so that they could use the earnings to fund a tour. The stunt attracted millions of plays, and eventually enough was enough for Spotify.
Vulfpeck keyboardist Jack Stratton told Billboard magazine that the tour is still “up in the air” since the band won't know how much it really earned from Spotify until mid-May at the earliest. Based on 5.4 million streams and a calculation from previous payouts, he estimates the payday at $30,000.
Since the album was pulled, Vulfpeck have released a new EP, Official Statement, which has a 30 second silent track.
