ACT Party campaign manager Richard Prebble is confident John Banks will do the right thing as he considers whether to resign as an MP.
The Epsom MP was on Thursday found guilty of filing a false electoral return after a two-week judge-only trial before Justice Wylie in the High Court at Auckland.
The judge has not yet formally convicted him as his legal team seeks a discharge without conviction.
ACT leader Jamie Whyte has given Banks the weekend to consider whether he should quit his Epsom seat before his sentencing on 1 August - the day after Parliament rises for the 20 September general election.
Mr Prebble told TVNZ's Q and A programme he would not speak for Banks but he knew the MP would be carefully considering his options.
"What I do know is that John will look at everything. He's an honourable man and he will do what he thinks is in the best interests of the country and the party and his electorate."
Prime Minister John Key has said National does not need Banks’ vote to govern, and National's campaign manager, Steven Joyce, backed that stance.
"He's just being straight up in terms of his view on it. He doesn't want to pass legislation, probably, on the strength of one vote if it's that particular vote," Mr Joyce said.
