The University of Otago is to spend $650 million on new buildings over the next 15 years.

The major investment will change the look of the university's main campus in Dunedin, but also those in Christchurch and Wellington, it announced on Friday.

The highest priority is given to the complete refurbishment of New Zealand's only dental school at a cost of at least $50 million within five years.

The plan also shows for the first time a new performing arts centre, upgraded science buildings and a new aquarium, likely to be in the centre city.
