Drum and bass producer Rich ‘Borderline’ Gibbons says his love of music was kickstarted by good drums over heavy bass. That started the addiction before he began making his own beats.

Hailing from Nelson and Motueka, he says the seclusion of the area has its downfalls, but in the winter, it is a good place to get inspired. “The location of what we have access to just creates awesome culture for music,” he says.

Local bush raves were a big influence on the self-managed beat-maker – before council restrictions made setting up a soundsystem in the bush complicated, placing security, consents and license requirements on the area, Gibbons says.

“You used to be able to rock in to any nice little part of the bush up here and just set up a sound system and have a party with 20 of your mates.”

Flashes of The Future is the debut album from Nelson based drum n bass producer Rich Gibbons aka Borderline.
