SIS criticised for 'inaccurate' release

10:27 am on 25 November 2014

A report into the SIS has criticised the spy agency over releasing incomplete, inaccurate and misleading information.

The Inspector General of Intelligence and Security, Cheryl Gwyn, has this morning released findings of her investigation, prompted by into allegations in Nicky Hager's book Dirty Politics.

The report finds that the release of information on former Labour leader Phil Goff to right-wing blogger Cameron Slater was inaccurate and misleading. The current head of the SIS , Rebecca Kitteridge, has apologised to Mr Goff.

In 2011, Mr Goff said he had never been briefed about alleged Israel spies being caught up in the Christchurch earthquake in February that year. Both John Key and the-then SIS director, Warren Tucker, disputed that. Dr Tucker's briefing notes were then released in a matter of days after Cameron Slater made a request for them. They appeared to confirm that Mr Goff had been briefed on the matter.
