The All Seeing Hand: Wellington trio The All Seeing Hand have just begun an extensive 11-date trip around the country with Seth Frightening and Lady Lazer Light in tow. This evening their tour arrives at The Sherwood in Queenstown and will be followed over the weekend with gigs at Chick’s Hotel and the Darkroom to finish off the South Island leg of their journey. Ryan Adams: With his Auckland show already crossed off the list, Ryan Adams hits Wellington this evening to play one last New Zealand show at the Opera House. The tour follows the release of his self-titled record, which came out last year, and, unlike his last visit down our way, he’ll be backed by his full band, The Shining. Joining him is Tiny Ruins, who just wrapped up a tour around the country with Bic Runga and if you’re considering going at the last minute, tickets are available via Ticketek.
Mimsy Cable: Bedroom singer/songwriter Mimsy Cable plays the Wine Cellar this Sunday evening to celebrate her debut release, The Coral Reef EP, which is out on Monday. Her band includes the recently-profiled Jessie Cassin as well as members from Tiny Ruins and Paquin, while the Auckland musician will also be supported by Herriot Row on the night. Tickets are $12 via Under The Radar, or $20 with a digital copy of the EP.
ALT + CTRL + DANCE: This Saturday sees 27 acts perform across four venues on and around K Rd as part of ALT + CTRL + DANCE. Nathan Haines, Haz Beats, Rackets, The Echo Oh’s and Caitlin Blake are amongst the names on the lineup and $20 will get you into Whammy Bar, Wine Cellar, Neck of The Woods and Beresford Square’s The Station for all of the shows. Popcast: The New York Times’ Jon Caramanica recently wrote about the outsiders of hip-hop, seemingly underground artists such as Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole that have found themselves at the centre of the genre. It’s led to an interesting roundtable discussion, which is definitely worth carving out some time to listen to. Who is the real mainstream and what impact will they have on the next wave of rappers?
Johnny Marr: After a long wait that saw his show get rescheduled earlier this year, Johnny Marr is set to play Auckland’s Powerstation this evening. The former Smiths guitarist released his second album Playland late last year and a press release promises that he’ll be “armed to the teeth with classics and his own lauded solo works” when he plays here tonight. Remaining tickets are still available over at Ticketmaster.
Fuck The Paparazzi: Released online last year, Fuck The Paparazzi, the split EP from Career Girls and Sexxx Haus, has recently been pressed to vinyl and both acts play a release show this Friday to celebrate. They’ll be joined by Disasteradio and Wywy Brix and the show takes place at Flying Out’s basement space on Pitt Street. Entry for the show is $10, but RSVPing is essential.
