Crew battle three blazes as seven tourists rescued from fire

Fire investigators are returing to the scene of a blaze at Parewānui after a spate of bush fires.

Three fires that broke out in the North Island on Wednesday, including one that saw seven stranded people rescued from a beach in Auckland.

The Parewānui fire was mostly contained last night and crews will remain on site for at least the next 48 hours.

Shift manager Murray Dunbar said the fire was contained but had burned through nearly a hectare of 10-year-old standing pine.

He said multiple crews were working alongside excavators to strengthen containment trenches and extinguish hotspots.

Crews also stayed overnight at the scene of a fire in the Tahorakuri Forest area, north of Taupō. Fire and Emergency say the fire is under control.

It has burned through 19 hectares of vegetation.

Emergency services were called to the fire on Te Toke Road in the Tahorakuri Forest area shortly before 1pm on Wednesday.

At least a dozen fire trucks and tankers fought the blaze supported by three helicopters on Wednesday.

Shift manager Hayley Prince said the fire was fully contained just after 8.30am.

She said six crews remained at the scene working alongside two excavators to turn over the surface of the fire ground and check for hotspots.

Crews were expected to stay at the site for the next 48 hours.

Lifeguards rescued people stranded after fire broke out near Anawhata Beach in West Auckland.

Piha Surf Lifesaving Club used five rescue vessels to pull seven people from the beach and take them to Piha.

Fire and Emergency say said that fire was also under control and firefighters would be back on the ground on Wednesday morning.
