Opposition calls for free public transport over Christmas to revitalise CBD

The Victorian opposition is calling on the state government to do more to bring workers and shoppers back to Melbourne's CBD in time for the holiday period.

Shadow Minister for Small Business and CBD Recovery David Southwick said free public transport and parking over the coming months would help to increase patronage.

Office vacancy rates have risen sharply across the nation since the onset of the pandemic, but it has been most pronounced in Melbourne and Sydney.

"During the Christmas period is the busiest period of the lot, and that's why we've got to get workers and shoppers back into the city now," Southwick said.

"We've all done our bit in terms of getting vaccinated, let's get the city back, let's revitalise it to where it once was and let's have a Christmas that everybody is desperate for."
