A former Democrat strategist says the party is going to have to do much more to win back support from working class voters.

Caleb Gardner was Barack Obama's digital strategy director during his second term.

He says President-elect Donald Trump has done a great job channelling the frustration and anger of lower income people who are feeling they can't get ahead.

He says the Democrats have a big job ahead.

"The party has to regroup and recognise how the population of the United States has shifted and what they want.

"I think we have to reconcile with who we have controlling our media environment right now, including tech billionaires that so obviously are part of the Republican Party now."

Gardner says there will also be party strategists who will not want to back another woman Presidential candidate for a very long time.

Votes are still being counted in some areas, with the winners in a handful of states - Alaska, Arizona, Maine and Nevada - yet to be announced.
