The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says New Zealand is not attending a so-called Coalition of the Willing summit in Paris.

French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting Ukraine and 30 other countries for the summit in Paris on Friday.

The group consists of those who had expressed an interest in supporting Ukraine and possibly supplying peace-keeping troops in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.

New Zealand had been in attendance at a previous meeting of some of the nations involved earlier this month.

A ministry spokesperson said MFAT understood the summit was an in-person leaders' meeting with a European and NATO focus.

They said New Zealand continued to support and welcome efforts by our partners towards a full ceasefire, and ultimately a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.

Ahead of the summit, President Macron held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he announced a further $3.67b NZD in French military aid to Ukraine.

"Russia shall have no right of say regarding the support we are providing and will provide Ukraine, nor shall Russia set the conditions for a sustainable, lasting peace," Macron said.

The package included the supply of French drones, missiles, tanks and fighter jets, he said.

A plan was also being worked on for intelligence sharing assistance, Macron said.

He said the summit would be aimed at bolstering aid to Ukraine, discussing the limited ceasefires and a future European role to deter Russia from attacks once there was a negotiated deal.

Zelensky thanked France and Ukraine's European allies for their continued support, while encouraging the world to keep putting sanctions on Russia.

The US said earlier this week it had brokered a deal between Ukraine and Russia for a ceasefire in the Black Sea, which would allow for safe commercial shipping passages.

Ukraine said it would come into effect immediately, but Russia said it would only begin once certain sanctions on Moscow were lifted.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the White House was "looking at" Russian sanctions.
