This episode of Treaty Talks is with manuhiri Eru Kapa-Kingi (Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu).

The kōrero looks into the significance of He Whakaputanga (the Declaration of Independence) in 1835, which affirmed Māori sovereignty prior to the Treaty of Waitangi. It examines how this foundational document paved the way for the treaty.

Treaty Talks was filmed in September 2024 at Te Papa Tongarewa inside Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Ngā tohu kotahitanga exhibition, prior to the introduction of the Treaty Principles Bill and the nationwide hīkoi in November.
