Christchurch-based violinist Cathy Irons is a whirlwind of musical activity. She regularly plays in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and is involved in multiple ensembles playing a wide range of music from baroque and classical to contemporary and jazz throughout New Zealand and overseas.

On Sunday 12 May, she'll be performing a concert in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Hanmer Springs Hotel with one of her many ensembles, the Cathy Irons String Quartet.

As far as Irons is aware, it's the first time in 100 years there's been a classical music concert held in the Grand Ballroom.

And there's a 'hundred years apart' theme to the concert as well, with music from different centuries including works by Mozart, Borodin and Piazzolla.

The quartet will also be performing one of the "highlights of the Baroque era", Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

"Every time I practise it, I come out of the practice room skipping," says Irons. "It's very joyful, just incredibly beautiful."

Proceeds from the concert will go towards new mobility wheelchairs for patients needing assistance at the Hanmer Spring Health Centre.
