Tropical Storm Peipah has forced the cancellation of classes at a middle school on the Northern Marianas island of Saipan.

Hopwood Middle School is not expected to open for up to two months

The Public School System has announced that Hopwood Middle School would be closed today due to heavy rain and flooding from the storm.

Two other schools - Kagman Elementary School and San Vicente Elementary School - were also opened as evacuation shelters for community members vulnerable from the storm.

Hopwood's 1,000 students are currently holding classes in tents set up next to a nearby elementary school as its original site was destroyed by last year's Super Typhoon Yutu.

All other public schools will have classes as scheduled.
