Upset New Zealand holidaymakers have complained about comparison website Trivago multiple times in the past five years.

The website has been found guilty in Australia of misleading customers about cheap hotels on its website and television advertising.

A federal judge says the website didn't show the cheapest rooms, but instead displayed advertisers who paid the biggest fees.

New Zealand's Commerce Commission said it had received 18 complaints about Trivago in five years.

It said it had no current investigation into the company.

It did look at Trivago's pricing in relation to additional taxes and tariffs in 2018 and decided not to take enforcement action.
