Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Thursday

The Situation

A ridge of high pressure over the country today, retreats to northern New Zealand tomorrow as a cold front approaching from the Tasman Sea moves onto the southern South Island overnight, then continues northwards over Aotearoa/New Zealand tomorrow.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland

Cloudy periods. Isolated showers, becoming widespread and possibly heavy tomorrow afternoon.

Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo

Mainly fine today. Areas of fog tomorrow morning then showers developing.

Gisborne to Wairarapa

Mainly fine, then showers spreading north tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Waitomo to Wellington, including Taumarunui and Taihape

Cloud increasing. A few showers in Taranaki today and elsewhere tomorrow. Some heavy showers for Taranaki.

Nelson and Marlborough

Mainly fine. Isolated showers developing tomorrow afternoon.

Buller and Westland

Mostly cloudy with isolated showers. Becoming fine tomorrow.

Canterbury and Otago

Fine today, apart from areas of cloud or fog morning and night. Showers spreading north tomorrow.

Southland and Fiordland

Fine, apart from isolated coastal showers, turning to rain everywhere for a time tomorrow morning.

Chatham Islands

The odd shower, turning to rain tomorrow evening.

Tuesday

North Island: Showers, clearing in the southwest from Waikato to Wellington, also Wairarapa. South Island: Mostly fine, but a few showers in the far south.

Wednesday

North Island: Scattered showers in the north, also Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, mostly fine elsewhere. South Island: Morning rain in Fiordland and Southland, spreading north to Kaikoura Coast late, but clearing in the south. Mainly fine elsewhere.

Thursday

North Island: Showers in the south and east, easing late. Mainly fine elsewhere, but isolated showers in Northland. South Island: Scattered showers in Canterbury and Marlborough clearing, then becoming fine everywhere.

Friday

North Island: Mostly fine, but a few showers in the east. South Island: Fine, apart from a few showers in the far south.

And at the Chathams

A few showers, turning to rain for a time during Thursday. Southerlies, turning westerly for a time on Wednesday.
