Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday

The Situation

A ridge of high pressure builds over the country today as a low east of the North Island pulls away. Tomorrow, the ridge remains slow moving and dominating most of the country, but a front pushes onto the lower South Island by the end of the day.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland to Waitomo, Coromandel, also Bay of Plenty and the central high country

A few showers, clearing south of Auckland this afternoon and elsewhere tomorrow.

Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa

Scattered showers, clearing Wairarapa this afternoon and elsewhere tonight. Fine tomorrow.

Taranaki to Wellington

Becoming fine this afternoon. Some cloudy periods return tomorrow evening.

Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago

Fine weather, with passing high cloud.

Buller, Grey and Westland

Fine today. Cloudy periods increasing tomorrow, with a few showers developing about Westland tomorrow afternoon and elsewhere tomorrow evening.

Fiordland and Southland

Few showers developing about Fiordland tomorrow morning, turning to rain tomorrow evening and spreading to Stewart Island with possibly heavy falls. Becoming mostly cloudy elsewhere tomorrow evening.

Chatham Islands

Periods of rain, some heavy. Clearing this afternoon, but remaining mostly cloudy.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Friday

North Island: Partly cloudy with isolated showers in the west. Fine elsewhere. South Island: A period of rain or showers in the west spreading northwards, possibly heavy. Scattered showers developing elsewhere.

Saturday

North Island: Partly cloudy with a few showers, mainly in the west and south of Waitomo. Mainly fine elsewhere. South Island: Showers in the west and south, some possibly heavy, easing north of Westland later. Isolated showers elsewhere, clearing to fine.

Sunday

North Island: Partly cloudy with isolated showers in the west. Fine elsewhere. South Island: Rain in the west and south, with some heavy falls, gradually easing. Scattered rain developing about Canterbury, with isolated showers elsewhere.

And at the Chathams

Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, but fine breaks developing later Friday. Light winds, with northerlies developing later Friday. Northwesterlies turning southwesterly on Sunday.
