The Situation
Today, a front moves northeast to lie east of the South Island, while a ridge of high pressure covers much of the country. Tomorrow, another front affects Fiordland from evening, while the ridge of high pressure remains over the rest of New Zealand.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland and Auckland
North of Warkworth: Mostly cloudy with isolated showers, clearing this evening but returning for a time tomorrow afternoon. Elsewhere: Mostly fine.
The remainder of the North Island
Fine, apart from a few areas of morning cloud or fog.
Buller, Nelson, Marlborough
Fine. Some morning low cloud for Marlborough.
Canterbury
Becoming fine this afternoon, then low cloud spreading north this evening. Possible fog tomorrow morning then becoming fine.
Grey and Westland
Fine apart from morning and evening cloud.
Fiordland
Mostly cloudy. Rain easing to a few showers this afternoon. Becoming fine for a time tomorrow afternoon, then rain again in the evening.
Otago and Southland
Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers clearing to fine tomorrow morning.
Chatham Islands
Mostly fine.
And the outlook for the following three days...
Thursday
North Island: Fine for most places. Showers spreading south from Northland to Bay of Plenty. South Island: periods of rain in the west and a few showers from Christchurch to Southland. Mainly fine elsewhere.
Friday
North Island: Showers for most, easing in the north. Remaining mainly fine in Wellington and Wairarapa. South Island: Scattered showers in the north, clearing, but showers increasing about Fiordland and Stewart Island. Mainly fine elsewhere.
Saturday
North Island: A few showers north of the Central Plateau. Fine in the south. South Island: Periods of rain for Fiordland and Stewart Island. Partly cloudy elsewhere.
And at the Chathams
Fine on Thursday, then partly cloudy with a shower or two on Friday. Cloud increasing on Saturday, with an evening shower or two. Southwesterlies, turning northerly on Thursday then dying out on Friday. Northwesterlies developing on Saturday.
