Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday
The Situation
A ridge over central Aotearoa New Zealand is weakening, as a cold front is moving northeast over the South Island this afternoon, reaching Wellington late tonight and then moving away to the northeast on Thursday afternoon. A strong cold southerly change is following the cold front up the country.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland to north Taranaki, including central high country and Bay of Plenty
Fine. Areas of frost tomorrow morning.
South Taranaki to Wellington, including Wairarapa
Fine at first. Showers spreading north late tonight with a gale southerly change. Showers clearing tomorrow afternoon and winds easing.
Gisborne and Hawke's Bay
Mostly cloudy with isolated showers today. Showers spreading north tomorrow morning, then clearing from afternoon.
Nelson, Buller and Westland
Partly cloudy today, with isolated showers in the west. Fine tomorrow, frosts developing at night.
The remainder of the South Island
Rain spreading north this afternoon and evening with snow above 400 metres, followed by a few showers. Showers clearing tomorrow and becoming fine, but late showers about the south coast. Frosts developing at night.
Chatham Islands
Cloudy periods. Rain with heavy falls developing tomorrow afternoon.
And the outlook for the following three days...
Friday
Showers about Gisborne, Southland, Clutha and Dunedin, spreading to north Canterbury to Wellington, Wairarapa and coastal Hawke's Bay later in the day. Fine elsewhere.
Saturday
Showers in the far south and easing east of the North Island. A few early showers about Wellington, north Canterbury and Marlborough. Fine elsewhere.
Sunday
Mainly fine. Isolated showers in the west from Taranaki to Wellington, and for Buller, northern Westland, and the far south.
And at the Chathams
Showers and fresh to strong southwesterlies Friday through Sunday.
