For God's Sake Saddle me a Donkey by Dinah Priestley
Four New Zealanders and their two young children travel in an old army blitzer from Wellington NZ to London between 1963 and 65. Their travels are fraught with accidents - they fall into Thai rivers, their truck bogs in the mud of the Ganges, they lose the rag.
But always it is the kindness and concern of peasants and prostitutes, missionaries and Maharajahs that helps them through.
