Yvonne Lorkin's Mulled Wine

YVONNE’S MAGICAL MULLED WINE
1 x bottle of cheap red wine (I prefer a sweeter, spicier style like an aussie shiraz)
2 x tablespoons of brown sugar
1 x cup orange juice
1 x cup ginger ale
1 x cinnamon stick
2 x whole star anise
a hefty pinch of grated nutmeg
1 x quarter cup brandy (if you wish)
1 dried bay leaf
