About RNZ Commissioning

Whether it’s factual or entertainment content, the RNZ Commissioning Team aim to uncover, support and work with the most promising external producers, creatives and networks to strengthen and progress public service programming in Aotearoa.

  • We are committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and at least half of our commissions will be Māori content (defined using partnership, participation and protection).
  • RNZ has set a goal of reaching 80% of New Zealanders. When we commission we’re focussed on audiences that don’t traditionally connect with RNZ. This includes te ao Māori and Pasifika and Pan-Asian communities. We’re looking for content that serves these audiences along with rangatahi.

    We describe our audiences as
Foundational: This core group represents our loyal base, with whom we seek to increase the frequency of our engagement
Emerging: We’re committed to connecting with a more complete representation of contemporary Aotearoa with an emphasis on people who are typically more digitally reliant and engaged
Transformational: It's our goal to be at the forefront of innovation, meeting emerging audience needs by creating new forms of content utilising the attributes of current and fast evolving platforms.

External content commissioning focuses on emerging and transformational audiences. The content should resonate with those audiences considering demographics, interests, and cultural context.
  • We’re also suckers for a relevant educational NZ history or natural world documentary.

RNZ have partnered with the Pan-Asian Screen Collective (PASC) and Pacific Islands Screen Artists (PISA) on a development fund.

RNZ is committed to reflecting the diverse communities of Aotearoa as it strives to create outstanding public media that matters. It is part of RNZ’s content strategy to grow representation of Pan-Asian and Pasifika people and stories, and work with producers and creatives from these communities to develop projects to be published on rnz.co.nz and rangatahi platform TAHI, and associated social media channels.
