If you ever learned to play the piano, it's likely you've played some of Muzio Clementi's fifty sonatas, composed specifically as teaching aids. The piano was a newly developed instrument in Clementi's day, and he was active in securing its' popularity.
Clementi spent eight years on a European tour, as a 'musician in business', selling pianos and collecting manuscripts (especially Beethoven's).
He performed in the courts of Europe and was known as a rival of Mozart's.
