With the increasing acceptance of Sondheim as a seminal figure in the development of the arts of music and theatre in America over the last 60 years, his career has been well documented.
Yet many people still know him primarily as the lyricist who joined with composer Leonard Bernstein and choreographer Jerome Robbins to create West Side Story. In fact Sondheim was only 25 when he became part of the ‘West Side’ team. It was his Broadway breakthrough, the thing for which he may be most famous in the mind of the public, and ironically the one work he says he would re-write if he could.
But from 1970 to 1979 Sondheim produced five consecutive Broadway musicals that re-defined not only the genre of ‘musical theatre’, but influenced playwrights, composers, poets, directors, producers, designers, indeed anyone who uses words, music or the medium of theatre to express themselves.
