Whakatipua is an evocation of the dramatic, yet austere landscapes around Queenstown, in New Zealand's South Island. The open textures suggest the unique quality of southern light, while Anthony Ritchie's incorporation of folk-like elements reflects the gold rush days of the 1860's. The fathomless depths and many moods of Lake Wakatipu provide the power of the piece.
Whakatipua was composed in 1995-6, commissioned by Morgan Jones for his wife Pat on her 60th birthday.
