The imagination of youth, reassessed through the critical lens of experience.
Performed by NZTrio: Amalia Hall (violin), Ashley Brown (cello), and Somi Kim (piano).
Brahms began writing this trio in 1854 when he was just 21.
It's one of the few early works that he didn't throw into the fire because of his relentless self-criticism.
However he did return to it 30 years later to revise it - to tighten it up and temper its youthful extravagance.
Both versions were published. Here, NZTrio performs the revised version.
