A tribute to two cellists
Performed by NZTrio: Amalia Hall (violin), Ashley Brown (cello), Somi Kim (piano)
Arensky wrote his first piano trio in 1894 in memory of the great Russian cellist Karl Davidov, who had recently died – Tchaikovsky had called him the “Czar of cellists”.
Arensky’s father had also been a cellist. We can hear the tribute he paid to them both in the profound third movement titled ‘Elegy’.
Recorded by RNZ in the Loft at Q Theatre, Auckland, 14 July 2019
