Designs was inspired by Reuben’s vague memory of a mysterious piece of music he heard on the radio a long time ago.
He says: “I heard a piece on the radio late at night when I was quite young, unlike any that I’d heard before; neither do I think I’d ever recognise it again. In the morning I checked the previous night’s programme and couldn’t find what I was looking for. I’m not sure I actually heard the piece that I now remember: the impression was distinctly that of a grand city collapsing, of its buildings tumbling and never ceasing.”
