Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) played a major role in the establishment of the concerto grosso form, where a small set of soloists perform within a larger group.
His Concerto Grosso in D Op 6 No 1 uses this style to great effect as melodies are passed between small and large ensembles within the work.
The strings of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra are directed from the violin by Vesa-Matti Leppänen.
