Carl Nielsen wrote this short piece for flute and harp in 1920-21 as part of his incidental music for a play, "The Mother", by Helge Rode.
Rode's play is a fairy-tale allegory about the return of a kidnapped son. This melody accompanies the first scene in which the mother is seen parting from her son through the rising fog.
