Performed by the New Zealand Chamber Soloists: Katherine Austin (piano), Lara Hall (violin), James Tennant (cello)
Haydn, though Austrian by birth, spent most of his working life employed by the Eszterházy family in Hungary.
But it was only really a part-time job and he spent a lot of time in England. In London in 1795, he wrote this piano trio ... the third movement has the inscription “Rondo in the Gypsies stile”.
In all likelihood, Haydn would have heard travelling Romany musicians during his time with the Eszterházys and he incorporated a number of tunes in this movement, including Verbunkos or ‘Recruiting Dances’.
