Edo de Waart says that one of the great joys of conducting Beethoven’s music today is that we’re now closer to the ‘real’ Beethoven than we’ve ever been due to the extensive research and scholarship of his scores and the leading musicians and conductors who’ve given historically informed performances of Beethoven’s music. For this cycle, Edo de Waart uses relatively recent critical editions (Baerenreiter scores) in which scholar Jonathan Del Mar corrected numerous mistakes that have been perpetuated for decades.
