Sound Lounge for Tuesday 11 February 2014
7:30 Osvaldo Golijov
The composer talks about his music in general and Ainadamar in particular (ahead of its performance at the NZ Festival in March). The work’s about the Spanish writer, Federico Garcia Lorca and his muse Margarita Xirgu. It’s got flamenco, galloping horses, and duende.
8:20 Carlos Marks' Dislalia
"Far from imitating traditional music from distant cultures, Carlos Marks explores them deeply, appropriating and re-elaborating fundamental elements. Thus the irregular rhythms and sinuous phrasing of Balkan music, the cadence of Mexican huapango, the sadness of Canto Cardenche, the timbres of contemporary composition, the spontaneity and energy of free jazz melt together and transform, creating a unique and relevant language: cutting edge music for the 21st century."
