If you’re a regular listener to RNZ Concert, you'll know most of the music we play is from the Western classical tradition.

But there’s another tradition growing in strength and numbers in Aotearoa New Zealand – one which has its roots in India.

Manjit Singh is a tabla player who set up the Rhythm School of Indian Music in Auckland in 2010.

He’s also blazing a trail at Auckland University, where he’s running a course on the Indian Classical tradition at the University’s music school.

Manjit, who migrated here from the Punjab, spoke with Three to Seven host Bryan Crump about his teaching his tradition, not just to fellow members of the local Indian community, but all New Zealanders.

Manjit will be performing in two concerts at the end of the month in Wellington and Auckland with top sitar maestro Purbayan Chatterjee from Mumbai.
