The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra has two concerts coming up this weekend, as part of the city's Puaka Matariki Festival. Included in the programme is 'Manaaki', a composition by Phil Brownlee and Ariana Tikao.
'Manaaki' takes inspiration from the pōwhiri process, the ritual of encounter that typically happens on marae. Manaaki - meaning to give hospitality, show respect and generosity for others - is a fundamental concept within te ao Māori.
The work was originally written for taonga pūoro and string quartet. For the Dunedin concerts, Phil has adapted it for the strings of the orchestra.
Ariana and Phil talked with Bryan Crump about composing 'Manaaki', and their creative process.
