For many years it’s been the gateway instrument; cheap, portable, relatively easy to get started on – but perhaps, not the funkiest kid on the block.
Judith Bell is changing all that.
With help from her son Michael and funding from MENZA (Music Education NZ, Aotearoa), she’s co-created Kiwicorder, a new teaching resource for the recorder.
It’s all free and available online, with New Zealand-flavoured tunes written specially by Judith and her son in a variety of styles from pop and rock to Celtic and beyond.
Judith spoke to Three to Seven host Bryan Crump about Kiwicorder, her mission to bring a bit more fun into the student recorder repertoire, and the origins of the instrument’s name.
