There was a time when plays often came with live incidental music: think Beethoven’s Egmont, Schubert’s Rosamunde or Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

These days, sound systems usually take the place of a band but that’s not the case for a new play opening soon at Auckland’s Q Theatre.

The writer, director and composer Sophie Lindsay and violinist Peau Halapua have collaborated to produce music to accompany Sophie’s new play, ÉMILIE.

It’s about the scientist Émilie Du Châtelet, who introduced much of the physics of Sir Isaac Newton to the French-speaking world.

Peau and Sophie spoke with Three to Seven host Bryan Crump.
